Is “Miss Americana & The Heartbreak Prince” a love story or is it political? The short answer: It’s both.

“The song is about disillusionment with our crazy world of politics and inequality, set in a metaphorical high school.” Taylor Swift said in her storyline explanation on Spotify. “I wanted it to be about finding one person who really sees you and cares about you through all the noise.”

“It's you and me, that's my whole world” 

While a lot of Taylor Swift’s songs are autobiographical, there’s never a certainty of it until she confirms the meaning. For simplicity’s sake, this analysis will refer to Taylor as the narrator, but it doesn’t mean that the song is written about her life or from her perspective. 

Verse 1

Waving homecoming queens, marching band playing

I'm lost in the lights

American glory faded before me

Now I'm feeling hopeless, ripped up my prom dress

Running through rose thorns, I saw the scoreboard

Using the imagery of a high school to represent the world, Taylor expresses the feeling of being “lost” in the world. She feels “hopeless” as the glory of America fades from her mind. The scoreboard (a symbol for the current state of the country) frightened her and she left.

It's been a long time coming, but

Here, she is likely referencing her political silence before she recently become vocal about her views. The news didn’t report what she found upsetting about politics, because she didn’t want to share that information. Now she is very open about her political opinions. This is also where she introduces the person who understands her through the confusion.

Taylor finds refuge in their relationship. Though people are speaking badly of her, it’s not a part of the world the two of them share, so it doesn’t impact her as deeply. The gossip and pettiness Taylor sees in the world, specifically America, seems to be a “stupid game” that there’s no point in winning. This person shares her perspective. She is Miss Americana, an encapsulation and product of everything good about America, and he is the Heartbreak Prince. His name is more difficult to understand, but the romantic imagery fits with the style of Taylor Swift’s earlier albums. A prince has not yet advanced to the role of king, so it could be he has the potential to break her heart, just as a prince has the potential of becoming king. It may be that so many girls have fallen in love with him that he’s not just considered a “heartbreaker,” but the prince of them.They share each other’s pain. Due to the political nature of the lyrics, blue in this case, is referencing the blue of the Democratic political party, as well as their sadness.

I see the high fives between the bad guys

Who seems to care

American stories burning before me

I'm feeling helpless, the damsels are depressed

Boys will be boys then, where are the wise men?

Darling, I'm scared

“My team” is most likely the Democratic party, and the loss is the 2016 election. Again, he understands her pain because he shares her perspective. She feels helpless as the “American stories” appear to be burning before her as the country changes for what she believes to be the worse. “Boys will be boys” is a reference to the cliche excuse of inappropriate behavior on the part of a man. She is asking if there are still good men in power, based off of the stories she’s been hearing that might suggest otherwise.

She tells him to stop fighting for a while, but instead to come home and rest. Fight with each other will only hurt both of them, but they won’t give up, because if they fight for each other, they can win.
